Review living situation to remove items that might pose as a risk for falling. Example, small furniture, tiny pets, etc. Also, install bars in bathrooms or other areas that offer assistance to prevent falling.

Smoking has been proven to cause increased bone loss.

Exercise is necessary for bone building. Thirty minutes of weight bearing exercises (like walking) should be done approximately three days a week. The benefits are quickly lost if the activity is stopped.

A balanced diet without too many calories and proper amounts of calcium and Vitamin D (for example, milk and dairy)

Calcium— premenopausal women and men = 1,000 milligrams daily. Postmenopausal women = 1,500 milligrams daily.

Vitamin D—800 IU (international units) daily.
