Review living situation to remove items that might pose as a risk for falling. Example, small furniture, tiny pets, etc. Also, install bars in bathrooms or other areas that offer assistance to prevent falling. |

Smoking has been proven to cause increased bone loss. |

Exercise is necessary for bone building. Thirty minutes of weight bearing exercises (like walking) should be done approximately three days a week. The benefits are quickly lost if the activity is stopped. |

A balanced diet without too many calories and proper amounts of calcium and Vitamin D (for example, milk and dairy) Calcium— premenopausal women and men = 1,000 milligrams daily. Postmenopausal women = 1,500 milligrams daily. Vitamin D—800 IU (international units) daily. |
