Breastfeeding Techniques

Start with both mom and baby at ease

Baby sitting partially up

One arm on baby, one arm holding breast

Offer breast to baby, and allow baby to latch on to entire nipple area

If baby is not hungry, don’t force

Feed until satisfied if possible

About 50% of mom’s milk is gone in 2 minutes and about 90% in 4 minutes

Early on in baby’s life, offer both breasts at each feeding

By 3-4 weeks old, offer one breast and alternate each feeding

When finished, don’t pull baby off the breast as this can be uncomfortable, rather put a finger in corner of baby’s mouth to unlatch

Burp one to two times during feeding

Usually, anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes time is okay
